World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2026

Every year on 28 April, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) observes the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. Also known as ‘Safeday’, it is used to highlight the importance of protecting employees and promoting safer working environments.

This year’s theme focuses on the psychosocial working environment, which is defined by how work is designed, organised and managed, and the organisational practices that shape working conditions. It highlights that factors such as workload, working time, support, and fair and transparent processes strongly influence how work is experienced and affects employee safety, health and performance.

HSE identifies six areas of work that can affect stress levels:

  • Being unable to cope with the demands of the work
  • Being unable to control the way work is done
  • Not receiving enough information and support
  • Having trouble with relationships at work, or being bullied
  • Not fully understanding the role
  • Not engaging when a business is undergoing change

Stress affects everyone in different ways, with factors like skills, experience, age, or disability all influencing whether someone is able to cope. It is important to talk to someone if you are feeling stressed at work; this could be your line manager, our HR department, our Wellbeing Team, or our free and confidential Employee Support Service – details of which can be provided to you by a member of our Head Office Team.

Our Wellbeing Team sends out regular newsletters with information on how to promote your wellbeing, including events around the country specifically for carers and recipe ideas. If you would like to contribute to future newsletters or speak to a member of the team please email wellbeing@solosupportservices.co.uk.
